Lenas Platzl-Tipp: Tropical vibes in winter

What does a perfect winter day in Munich look like for you?
For me, it starts off tropical – right in the middle of the city. At the butterfly exhibition in the Botanical Garden Munich-Nymphenburg. The moment you step into the greenhouse, it feels like a little journey to faraway places: warm, humid air, lush greenery, and shimmering butterflies dancing silently through the space.
What makes this experience so special?
It’s that moment when a butterfly suddenly settles on your shoulder or on a flower right in front of you. You automatically slow down and become more mindful. Children gaze in amazement, adults reach for their phones, and for a brief moment the winter outside is completely forgotten. The colors seem almost unreal in the middle of the cold season. At the same time, you casually learn fascinating facts about biodiversity and where the butterflies come from. It’s not only beautiful, but truly inspiring.
Why is this such a great insider tip in winter?
Because the contrast couldn’t be bigger. Outside there might be fog or frost, inside it’s tropical climate and vibrant colors. Especially during the darker months, this light and warmth feel incredibly good. It’s like a short getaway without ever leaving Munich.
And how does your perfect day continue afterward?
After all that tropical flair, a walk through the wintery Nymphenburg Palace Park is the perfect follow-up. The crisp air, the quiet paths, and the view of the palace give the day a completely different mood. Afterwards, I like to stop by Josefa, warm up with a cup of tea, and let the impressions sink in.
Do you have one more tip for visitors?
It’s best to come during the week or early in the morning, when it’s a bit quieter and you can observe the butterflies at your own pace. And wear something light-colored — the butterflies are especially fond of bright tones. That way, the visit becomes more than just a small winter outing; it turns into a truly special experience. And don’t wait too long — the butterfly exhibition only runs until March 8.
