Joshuas Platzl-Tipp: A visit to the Riesige Rosi

What does a perfect active day in Munich look like for you?
For me, this time it starts vertically – at the “Riesige Rosi” in the underpass of Rosenheimerstraße, one of the most impressive climbing walls in the city. You can see it from afar: colorful, playful, stretching upwards and inviting everyone to reach a little higher. Whether beginner or pro: Rosi has a route for every mood and every level.
What makes the “Riesige Rosi” so special?
It’s that feeling when you take the first holds and immediately notice that here you don’t just climb – you experience something. The wall is creatively designed, varied, and full of little details that put a smile on your face. Some routes are easy and flowing, others challenge your arms, your head – and your courage. And then there’s that moment at the top: you look down, take a breath, and feel a mix of pride, calm, and lightness.
Why is a visit worthwhile right now?
Because Rosi simply puts you in a good mood – no matter if it’s wet, gray, or windy outside. Inside, there’s movement, music, energy – a little break from everyday life. You meet people who are having fun, cheering each other on, giving tips. This mix of sport and adventure is incredibly good, especially in the darker months.
And how does your perfect day continue afterwards?
After climbing, I like to treat myself to a walk through the city center – my arms pleasantly tired, my head wonderfully clear. And then the path usually leads me straight to the Platzl: a cappuccino at the Josefa Bar, a cozy spot by the window and a few minutes to review the day’s vertical meters.
Do you have another tip for visiting?
Definitely warm up beforehand – Rosi can be charming but also demanding! Anyone who is new to climbing should start with easier routes or treat themselves to a short introductory course. And: during the week it’s usually less busy, perfect for anyone who wants to try things out in peace.
The “Riesige Rosi” isn’t a place for records, but for small personal successes. An experience you won’t forget anytime soon – and one that might even leave you a little stronger than when you arrived.
